Easy, Toxin-Free Toilet Bowl Cleaning

Updated: Apr 29, 2020

Who doesn't like a clean toilet bowl? This is one of my least favorite jobs to do around the house! I am also working on getting toxins out of our home in 2020. Here is a great recipe for a toilet bomb that you can just drop in, give the toilet a quick swirl with the brush, flush and done. I was really please at how well it worked and smelled with NO Toxins! Normal toilet junk gone and it even got the hard water stains! I just tried cleaning the hard water junk in my sink, but I think it may need to be on longer for really hard water build up....like overnight. Leaving it in the sink for 30 minutes got 75% of the hard water ring removed!! Not even harsh chemicals have done this well with only one application!

Items Needed List

1 cup Baking Soda

1 cup Citric Acid - off Amazon, or near canning supplies

1 cup Corn Starch or Borax

Spray bottle with toxin free cleaner (I used a spray bottle with Thieves Cleaner)

1-2 Gallon zip lock bag

100 drops of your favorite essential oil (50 drop in first part, 50 drops for later use)

4 ice cube trays

How to do it

- Add all of the dry ingredients to zip lock bag. Mix well. Add 50 drops of your favorite oil - I love tangerine and lemon for the best smelling bathroom!

- Add 4-5 sprays of Thieves Cleaner (which is toxin free) to the open bag. Zip up and squeeze the bag until the liquid has been fully mixed. (Adding the fluids will activate the baking soda and cause some gases to be created, so you may need need to release air periodically. Using the larger bag helps control this problem.) This will be done a few times, and the end result should be like wet sand. If too much liquid has been added, your final product will be crumbly, and not hold it's shape well - this sounds counter intuitive, but is true. How much spray will depend on your local humidity, and time of year.

- When your mixture mix will hold its shape after squeezing it, then add the final 50 drops of essential oil, and mix again. (It is OK to mix a couple of oils of the same type - like all citrus oils. If you have some less than top quality oils, this is a good way to use them, without having to put them on your skin, or use internally).

- Press the mix into the ice cube trays, and let it sit 12-24 hours, then dump the ice cube trays onto a big cookie sheet, to catch a small amount of crumbs.

- Drop into toilet or a sink full of water for 10 minutes for regular cleaning and 60 minutes for heavy duty cleaning. For normal cleaning do a quick brush, and for heavy cleaning do a moderate brush, then just flush and enjoy a great smelling bathroom.

- Store in an air tight container until ready to use. You may find your kids volunteering to clean the toilet when it is this easy! These can be great neighbor gifts, or just for the best smelling bathroom on the block.

TIP: You can make smaller batches by reducing all of the ingredients.
